Dealing With Water Pollution In Hawaii

Danger might be lurking in the waters of Hawaii. Many tourists come to Hawaii to get awed by its beautiful islands, picturesque beaches and enjoy a variety of great water activities. But it looks like the ecological and economic lifeblood of Hawaii is being threatened by water pollution which is a direct result of negligence and people’s ignorance.

Researchers have been tracing the main source of coastal pollution in the area. The pressing problem on water pollution in Hawaii is said to be because of the state’s rapid growth and development. While the proliferation of hotels, business establishments, shopping malls and other profitable structures in Hawaii has greatly boosted its economic revenue, progress and development is also pinpointed as the cause of the worsening water pollution problem in the state.

To effectively address the problem on water pollution in the Hawaiian Islands, state administrators have created and implemented a law referred to as the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Amendment. Derived from the 1948 Federal Water Pollution Control Amendments, the Amendment of 1972 went through major amendments, which resulted to the emergence of two renewed laws —– 1987 Clean Water Act and 1977 Clean Water Act. Both became a major U.S law on water pollution. These laws were created to effectively monitor toxic pollutants, chemicals, and hazards present not just in the waters of Hawaii but in other US states as well.

Tourists and local residents alike are cautioned and warned to stay away from polluted areas in Hawaii. Researches revealed that there are certain spots in the state that contain the deadly bacterial disease Leptospirosis, which can be transmitted to human beings from animals, such as rodents. Leptospirosis can cause paralysis and therefore must be avoided at all cost. Carcinogenic substances as well as other toxic chemicals are found present in the Hawaiian water, too. Don’t worry much though since infected areas will definitely have warning signs up.

When visiting Hawaii, it is highly advised that you pay attention to local advisory or you can talk to the locals to know which areas (affected by severe water pollution) should be avoided. Rather than drink tap water, it would be safer that you buy bottled water from convenience stores when coming to Hawaii. Although there have not been any reports about disease outbreak in the area that stemmed from drinking contaminated tap water, one can never be too careful. Rest assured the local government of Hawaii is doing everything they can to resolve the issue of water pollution in the area, but for now, all we can do is hope for the best.
